Benjamin Birtle - Cello

Benjamin Birtle started learning the cello at the age of 8 with Alexander Kok, carried on his studies at Chethams School of Music and subsequently won a scholarship to study at the Royal Northern School of Music. Early on, he was given the honor of performing the Walton cello concerto in the presence of Lady Walton which followed a repeat performance at the Bridgewater Hall with the Halle Orchestra and a tour around the UK.

As a soloist, Benjamin has given performances with several orchestras playing concertos, including the Dvorak cello concerto, the Haydn cello concertos, and the Elgar and Saint-Saens cello concertos.

His love for chamber music took his cello and double bass duo Bass Instinct on tour around the USA and Spain Matthew Baker. He has performed internationally in recitals in the Cheltenham Festival, in Singapore, Canada, Italy and Switzerland and was also Musician in Residence at the Two Moors Festival in the UK. In 2019, Ben joined the Elan Quintet for their internationally acclaimed 4th album of the George Onslow string quintets and in 2022 he started working with the Valencia Baryton Project.

In addition to performing concertos, chamber music, and recitals, Benjamin is an examiner on behalf of the ABRSM.
