    • A further volume of out-of-the-way Haydn proves seductive....with Matthew Baker’s ingenious cadenza. Intriguing – and oddly addictive

What the critics said of the series

  • Our joy is expounded on when we hear the performances of this international ensemble based in Valencia. Led by barytonist Matthew Baker, his virtuosity on the instrument is just the starting point for the excellence of all the members of the Valencia Baryton Project.... Baker transforms every melody into a little treasure through his exquisite phrasing, which is perfectly complemented by violist Brett Walfish and cellist Ismar Gomes.... In short, this is a grand album filled with delightful music and fantastic performances.

  • The Valencia Baryton Project's second CD of Haydn's baryton trios was recently released. Both are superb recordings: recorded large, played with great style and understanding. Purity, articulation, dynamics, enthusiasm: nothing leaves much to be desired. You imagine yourself a guest at Eszterháza! Just listen to the penetrating, hushed, melancholy, breathtakingly beautiful Adagio from the Trio in D. Hob. XI:113. How beautiful the plucked strings behind the fingerboard sound here!

  • This album is thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end, all 71 minutes of it.
    American Record Guide2026.
  • The sensuality of sound, freshness and transparency of the recording inspire from beginning to end.
    Südweste Presse
  • The six works that you hear on this recording by the Valencia Baryton Project demonstrate what Haydn was capable of. We hear charming elegance and deep colors within a beautifully finished counterpoint. An instrument that is put in the spotlight through this music in all its possibilities and that arouses curiosity about what other contemporaries may have written for it, or about the possibilities for a number of other string scores within this unique instrumentation.
